Change of pace

The world is ever changing and as much as I’ve enjoyed traipsing around each continent in velcro shoes holding tightly to my mother’s hand, I’m ready for a new challenge.

I’ve been lucky enough to experience a lot of the world due to my upbringing and the opportunities I was presented through dance competitions. With a rocky end to 2017, I needed some independence, something to do for myself.

The start of a new adventure began on the 19th of February 2018 I booked my first solo overseas adventure. Hawaii would be my first port of call.

I decided to leap, I’m ready to leave the nest and as I looked at my teary eyed mother I clicked confirm on my flights. The nerves, excitement and anxiousness washed over me as I realised I’m about to travel for the first time as a single female.

A new way to travel

Within a world that’s so accessible via social media, I quickly realised my excitement and passion was shared but a wide group of females. I realised that I was not alone and that between 2013-2015 Solo travel increased by 9% while female travel increased by 72% according to the Visa Global Travel Intentions Study.

Each week I want to learn a new tip of how to be safe but all while enjoying my adventure. I thought compiling them into an easy to read blog would not only be beneficial for me, but for others wanting to travel alone as well.

Pinterest as a helpful travel tool

I started my Pinterest board and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of ‘Pinners’ and ‘Boards’ that related to mine. Pinterest as a whole also noted the 350% increase in women pinning solo travel ideas since 2014. The main demographic responsible for this surge ageing from 18 – 34.

One of the most helpful ‘boards’ that I have come across allows for a thorough insight into the top things to do on each island.

With flights booked, I was confronted with the fact that this holiday wouldn’t be spent in a secured luxurious apartment. In order to keep the cost down, as yes I am myself a uni student, I decided to stay for my 20 days in a backpackers style accomodation.

After thorough research I decided that I would splurge the extra $5 a night to stay in a room that would house 4 females. As it is my first trip I figured what better way to make some girl friends who understand how to take good Instagram pictures.

An increase of 230% of day trips and adventures treks are now Female only and designed specifically with solo female travellers in mind.

The countdown is on and in 113 days I will be arriving at the airport, fresh passport in hand. Excited for an adventure without constraints, equiped with all the best travel tips I can find.
